Harihara

The Twin-Culture City by the Tungabhadra

A Crossroads of Religion and Heritage

Harihar is a historically rich town perched on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. Once a powerful seat of the Hoysala Empire, the town is home to the Harihareshwara Temple, a stunning example of Hoysala architecture. The deity here is a unique fusion of Vishnu and Shiva, symbolising religious harmony. Harihar’s twin identity — both spiritual and political — shaped its evolution as a site of strategic and cultural importance.

The temple complex, built in the 12th century, features intricate sculptures and friezes that reflect the high craftsmanship of the time. The town also holds relics of Vijayanagara and Maratha influence, with its riverbanks serving as trade and pilgrimage routes for centuries.
