One of India’s Tallest Waterfalls, Hidden in the Western Ghats
Overview
Tucked away in the dense rainforests of Agumbe, Barkana Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in India, plunging over 850 feet (260 metres) into the gorge below. Formed by the Seetha River, this waterfall offers breathtaking views, rich biodiversity, and an atmosphere of raw, untouched wilderness.
Why Should You Visit
- A must-see for waterfall lovers, trekkers, and photographers
- Located in one of the wettest and most ecologically rich zones in India
- Offers panoramic vistas from the Barkana Viewpoint, where mist, clouds, and dense jungle collide.
How to Reach
Located about 10 km from Agumbe, the falls can be reached via a forest trail starting near Kigga village or through the Narasimha Parvatha trek for seasoned hikers. Due to wildlife sensitivity, prior permission from the Forest Department is required, and guided treks are highly recommended.
For those not trekking, Barkana Viewpoint offers a distant yet spectacular look at the waterfall and surrounding valley.
Best Time to Visit
The best views are between October and February, when the skies are clearer and the waterfall is still in full flow from the monsoon. During heavy rain, the trail may be restricted, and visibility is low due to dense mist.
Barkana is less about accessibility and more about adventure and pristine natural beauty.
