Introduction
Gaarudi Gombe, known as the magical doll dance, is a folk performance unique to Karnataka featuring dancers in giant, colorful puppet suits made of bamboo and papier-mâché.
History
The tradition dates back centuries and is linked to festivals and legends. According to folklore, even Lord Krishna performed this act to pacify his wife Satyabhama. It represents both fun and the ritual warding off of evil spirits.
The Troupe
Artists fit inside hollow puppet structures, standing 10–12 feet tall and weighing up to 40 kg. Usually men carry these heavy puppets, with each performer taking turns due to the weight and stamina required.
The Performance
Performed during major festivals and especially during Mysuru Dasara processions, dancers move in lively formations and sometimes wear simple masks representing different characters. The dance creates a vibrant spectacle, entertaining crowds for hours.
Where to witness
Mysuru Dasara, temple festivals across Karnataka, and large cultural events feature Gaarudi Gombe as a highlight.
