Walk Through Endless Green Hills in the Heart of the Western Ghats
Famous for its horse-shaped peak (which gives it the name Kudremukh), this trek offers a spectacular journey through rolling grasslands, hidden streams, and mist-covered forests. Located in Chikkamagaluru district, Kudremukh is part of a protected national park and is known for its biodiversity and panoramic beauty.
What to Expect on the Trail
The Kudremukh trek is around 20 km (round trip) and can typically be completed in a day, though it’s a full-day effort. The trail begins in dense forest and gradually opens into expansive meadows with undulating hills stretching as far as the eye can see.
Here’s what stands out:
- Shola forests filled with chirping birds and streams
- Windy plateaus and misty peaks that resemble scenes from a dream
- The iconic Kudremukh Peak, shaped like a horse’s face when viewed from the side
This is a moderate trek, suitable for beginners who are reasonably fit, and it’s especially enjoyable during the post-monsoon season (October to February) when everything is lush and green.
Where the Trek Starts
The trek starts from Mullodi village, which is reached via a jeep ride from the town of Kalasa. The trail is inside Kudremukh National Park, and trekkers must obtain a permit from the Forest Department before starting.
Only limited entries per day are allowed to protect the sensitive ecosystem, so booking ahead is recommended.
What Else to Do Nearby
After the trek, visit Hanuman Gundi Falls, explore Tea and Coffee Estates in Kalasa or nearby Horanadu Temple for a spiritual detour. Kudremukh is a place where raw nature meets peaceful isolation, making it a trek you’ll want to return to again.
